frottage on fabric, framed
This photo series examines the fate of the workers at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York in 1911. A devastating fire in the textile factory led to the death of numerous workers, almost all of them young women. Little to nothing is known about the victims, who burned or jumped to their deaths because they were illegally locked into the building. The tragedy became the catalyst for long-term feminist protests and the commemoration of this event was an important element in anchoring International Women's Day. The frottages subtly tell the story of these beginnings of the international women's movement.
